Dry needling, also known as medical acupuncture, is a technique used to treat pain and tightness in muscles, tendons and ligaments. Dry needling can be used as a stand-alone treatment, or as part of a wider treatment plan including joint manipulation, stretching and rehab exercises.

How it works

Thin disposable needles are inserted into tight/sore areas within the muscle, known as ‘trigger points’. These trigger points can cause pain locally in the sore area, and can also radiate pain to other areas of the
body. Needling these trigger points helps to decrease pain and restore function, and promote healing in the following ways:

Increasing blood flow: Increasing fresh blood to the area helps to deliver nutrients and remove waste, which helps to decrease inflammation and reduce pain.

Releasing tension: needling the trigger point directly stimulates the release of neurotransmitters endorphins and enkephalins, which are our body’s natural pain relieving chemicals. This stimulation to the nervous system helps to calm the pain response.

Restoring function: Needling can trigger a local twitch response within the muscle. This stimulation to the nervous system can help alter the length and tension of the muscle fibres.

A standard session will cost £35, or for an extended session (45 minutes) the cost will be £45.
